Mobile Donations Growing for Nonprofit Organizations

Mobile Giving for Nonprofits

Mobile donations to nonprofit organizations are on the rise all over Wisconsin. When text messaging began, who would have thought that one little text message could have so much impact?

Mobile donations surged with the Haitian earthquake of 2010. The American Red Cross announced that they were taking donations through text message. Those who wanted to give simply texted a keyword, “HAITI,” to a short code, and then the user was billed an extra $10 on their next cell phone bill. A lot of people probably felt that an extra $10 on their bill was very doable, and donations soared well into the millions of dollars.

Earlier this year, the Pew Internet Project released the findings of an interesting study done on mobile giving. The purpose of the study was to show what motivates those who make mobile donations, as well as the benefits and pitfalls of mobile giving.

The study looked at over 800 people who had donated to the Haiti relief efforts and found that for 74% of them, it was the first time they had used their mobile phone to make a charitable donation. Many of these subjects, 56%, reported that they have continued to use their mobile phone for charitable donations.

The Pew Internet Project study shows that once mobile users experience giving through text messaging, many enjoy doing it enough to continue. Why is this? One reason is probably the ease. The transaction itself couldn’t be much simpler for the giver, and the donation amounts are small enough to be considered workable.

The Pew study also estimated that because of the ease of mobile giving, it aids in the giver making a snap decision to give. There isn’t much about it to have to consider, so they don’t. Many who saw the keyword and short code advertised on television simply picked up their phone and made the donation without thinking about it.

The easiness of mobile giving also encourages those who have used it to spread the word to their friends and family members. The Pew study also found that 43% of those who donated to Haiti did tell their friends and family how to make the donation.

Churches with nonprofit status are also using mobile to increase their donations. They have recognized that parishioners are gaining in technical savvy and like the ease with which they can make their religious donations. Churches are establishing mobile presence with mobile websites, where smartphone users can simply make one click and donate whatever amount they choose using their credit or debit card.

Nonprofits such as the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society also use mobile giving as a tool to collect information that they can use in future fundraising efforts. They must obtain an “opt in” from the donor before doing this, but once they do, the donor’s cell number becomes part of the nonprofit’s database for future mobile fundraising.
